Notater
In addition to making a delicious agua fresca, hibiscus, also called flor de Jamaica, makes a mean margarita. While we make our own hibiscus syrup and garnish the drink with a hibiscus flower to make it extra-fancy, you can also make the syrup with Red Zinger or other bagged tea made with hibiscus. Don’t worry—your marg will still taste amazing.
TREJO’S DIY HIBISCUS SYRUP
There are two ways you can make this: with dried hibiscus flowers, which you can get at Mexican markets or online through Amazon, or with Red Zinger or another hibiscus-based herbal tea. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar and bring to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat. Add 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers or 4 hibiscus tea bags to the hot water and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the flowers or remove the tea bags, and let the syrup cool. It will keep for up to 1 week in the refrigerator.
