German Chocolate Bars

1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 package Betty Crocker Super Moist German chocolate cake mix
1 bag semisweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup milk
Topping:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup evaporated milk
3 egg yolks
1 1/3 cup flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease bottom and sides of rectangular pan, 13 by 9 by 2 in., with shortening. Cut butter into cake mix in medium bowl, using pastry blender or crisscrossing knives, until crumbly. Press half of the mixture (about 2 1/2 cups) in the bottom of pan. Bake 10 min.
Meanwhile, make the topping by mixing sugar, butter, milk, and egg yolks in a 2-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat about 12 min., stirring occasionally, until thick. Stir in coconut, pecans, and vanilla. Then spread carefully over the baked layer; sprinkle evenly with chocolate chips. Stir milk into remaining cake mixture. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto chocolate chips. Bake 25-30 min. or until cake portion is slightly dry to the touch. Cool completely, about 1 hour or serve warm.
