Edited to add FAQ's:
You do not need to add any liquid, the butter is enough.
If you'd like add a sliced onion and/or fresh mushrooms.
How to make my own onion soup mix: 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes, 1 tsp onion powder, ¼ tsp paprika, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp parsley flakes, ½ tsp salt, 1 beef bullion cube, ¼ tsp black pepper. If you don’t like onions or can’t eat them, prepare the mix without the dried onion flakes and onion powder.
You can add carrots, broccoli or green beans (either fresh or frozen) in the last 1-2 hours of cooking time.
All crock pots are different, and some run hotter than others. Check your beef at 6 hours and if it’s tender and the potatoes are cooked, it’s done. Some crock pots might run too hot to cook for a full 8 hours, you know your crock pot best.
I do not wash my beef, it’s unnecessary. Of course, you can if you want.
I do not sear the meat, it’s unnecessary in this dish. Of course, you can if you want.
If you don’t want to use pre-cut stew meat, get a chuck roast and cube it yourself.
Do not leave a crock pot unattended.
