Hot Cross Buns

1/2 cup warm water
1 T yeast
1 cup scalded milk
2 T shortening
2 T sugar
1 tsp salt
1 egg - beaten
3 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2/3 cup raisins
Directions
Soften yeast in warm water. Combine hot milk, shortening, Sugar and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Add softened yeast and egg. Gradually stir in flour and Cinnamon and raisins.
Cover and let rise. Form into buns and flatten slightly. Brush top with slightly beaten egg white or milk. Let rise. Using scissors, snip top of buns at right angles X to form a cross. Bake. While hot frost with powdered sugar icing. Cool, then make a cross with more icing. Bake at 375 for 20 - 25 minutes.

I baked these for Sunday dinner quite often when you kids were very young.
