    Roman Apple Coffee Cake

    CAKE:

    1 1/2 cups flour

    1 cup sugar

    1 teaspoon baking powder

    1/2 teaspoon baking soda

    1 egg

    1/2 cup milk

    1 teaspoon vanilla

    1/2 cup melted butter

    4 medium apples

    TOPPING:

    1/4 cup flour

    1/4 cup butter

    1 cup firmly packed brown sugar

    Arahan

    Preheat the oven to 350 and lightly butter/spray an 8-inch baking pan.

    Stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Use a spoon to form a well in the center of the flour mixture.

    In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg and pour into the well. Add the milk, vanilla, and melted butter to the well and stir until thoroughly combined.

    Peel, halve and core the apples. Cut the apples into thin wedges and stir in to the batter. Pour the batter into the baking pan and spread evenly.

    FOR THE TOPPING: Mix the flour, butter and brown sugar in a small bowl and mix well. Sprinkle evenly over the cake.

    Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top of the cake springs back when gently pressed.
